Midnight Fight: NDP Filibuster Efforts Derail Ford’s Power Grab

QUEEN’S PARK – Ontario NDP MPPs along with Marit Stiles, Leader of the Official Opposition, have successfully stalled progress on Bill 5.

NDP MPPs, along with members of the third party, used every committee tool to delay progress Ford’s attempt to rush through this legislation without proper consultations with First Nations.

By sustaining debate well into the night, Opposition members have pushed the committee process on Bill 5 to into next week.

“This is a bill that lets them override laws in their own favour,” said Stiles.

“Now they’re doing everything in their power to rush it through, including shutting the public out of the process — we won’t let them.

“We know Bill 5 isn’t about our economy, it isn’t about the North, it isn’t about anything other than an unchecked, unfettered power grab.

“The government now has the time and opportunity to do the right thing: scrap Bill 5, let’s go back to the drawing board, and do this right.”
